Damn you, February, with your number of days divisible by four! But you're over and now there are hints of spring. Whispers, if you will. I'll take 'em.
Fave winter hobby: making beeswax candles. Aren't these beautiful?
Homemade beeswax candles! Credit: A. O'Brien Fave new word: kakistocracy. Noun: a government run by the worst, least qualified or most unscrupulous citizens. Sound familiar?
Fave review of a book on spiders: "Tangled Web" by Kathryn Schulz in the Feb. 17 & 24, 2025 The New Yorker (also their 100th issue). Not only is this review funny, but it is also filled with delightful spider facts, such as:
Some spiders live for less than a year while others live for more than forty.
Spiders are predators and collectively, eat at least half a billion pounds of meat per year, more than the amount consumed by humans.
There are more venomous spiders than there are venomous animals of all other kinds combined. BUT:
Fewer than 0.5 percent of spider species possess venom that is toxic to humans.
Fave horrible cat pic: The gut, the foot, the squinty eye. It's perfectly horrible.
Mars in all his glory. Or something. Credit: A O'Brien 5. Fave pet name: I did a rabies vaccine clinic for the local humane society this weekend. We always have a contest (and when I say we, I mean me and when I say contest, I mean really just giggling) for the best pet names and here's the best one of the day: Princess Raspberry Macaroon. Runners up included: Bradley, Pete, and Pepsi. (Cat, dog, dog, and cat, respectively.)
